October 13, 2025Discover the Brainspotting Benefits
If you’ve been in talk therapy and still feel stuck—repeating the same patterns, carrying anxiety, or holding onto pain you can’t quite name—you’re not alone.
Sometimes healing can’t happen just through insight or words. Some experiences live deeper, in the nervous system—below the level of logic or conversation.
That’s where Brainspotting therapy can help.
This powerful, brain-body therapy is designed to access the places traditional talk therapy can’t always reach. Whether you’re dealing with trauma, chronic stress, or emotional blocks that don’t make sense, the brainspotting benefits are often found in how it works with your body’s natural ability to heal—without needing to explain everything in words.
In this article, you’ll learn:
- What Brainspotting is and how it works
- Why it’s effective when other therapies might fall short
- How it compares to EMDR therapy
- Whether Brainspotting can be done online
- How to decide if it’s the right fit for you
Let’s dive in.
So What Is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is a therapeutic method that uses your visual field to unlock stuck emotional and physical responses.
In simple terms: we find a “brainspot”—a specific point where your eyes naturally focus that connects to a deeper emotional experience—and we stay with it. This allows your brain and body to begin unwinding what’s been stored, often without needing to talk through it all.
Many people are surprised by how something so simple can feel so powerful. Brainspotting doesn’t require you to explain or analyze—it helps your body release what words alone haven’t been able to reach. This unique process is one of the most profound brainspotting benefits, allowing healing that often goes beyond traditional therapy.
Sessions often feel focused, and deeply internal. There’s no pressure to “perform” or explain things you don’t have words for. Your brain leads. I follow.
Why It Works When Other Therapies Don’t
Brainspotting targets the subcortical brain—the part responsible for emotion, trauma responses, and survival instincts. These areas can’t always be accessed through reasoning or conversation.
By gently focusing on a brainspot (and often using soothing bilateral sound), your nervous system is invited to do what it naturally knows how to do: process and release. That’s why Brainspotting can be so helpful for issues that don’t shift with talk therapy alone.
It’s especially effective for:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety (including high-functioning anxiety)
- Grief, loss, or life transitions
- Chronic stress or burnout
- Physical tension or somatic symptoms
- Creative or emotional blocks
Can Brainspotting Really Work Online?
Yes—and beautifully. As long as you’re in a quiet, private space, Brainspotting works just as well over video.
I guide you the same way I would in person. We find a brainspot, tune into your body, and stay with what arises—together. All the elements that make Brainspotting effective—eye position, body awareness, therapeutic presence—translate seamlessly to virtual sessions. This means you can still experience the powerful brainspotting benefits even from the comfort of your own home.
How Is brainspotting Different from emdr?
| EMDR | Brainspotting |
|---|---|
| Follows a structured, protocol-driven format | More intuitive and client-led |
| Uses repeated eye movements or tapping | Uses sustained eye focus on a single point |
| Therapist directs most of the process | Therapist holds space; the client’s body leads |
| Often requires clients to recall and describe traumatic memories, which can be intense | Allows clients to process trauma non-verbally, so they don’t have to talk about it if they’re not ready |
| Usually focuses on processing one specific traumatic memory at a time | Can work on multiple memories or issues as the mind naturally moves through them |
If you prefer a slower, gentler approach that honors your pace and helps you stay connected to your body, Brainspotting may be a better fit.
Is Brainspotting Right for You?
If you feel stuck in emotional patterns you don’t fully understand—or if talk therapy hasn’t gone as deep as you need, it might be time to try something different. I’m a licensed therapist in New York and Florida, and I invite you to a free 15 minute consultation. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we can explore what you’re going through and see if Brainspotting is a good fit for you.
